Identifying as a westerner, Rachel Stiff chooses her locale based on the criteria of space. Nevada has much to offer. From the outskirts of town, the artist examines Las Vegas and its relationship with surrounding landforms. Endless variations of color and light, depending on exact location and time of day are what give fodder to her work. Through painting, Stiff frames the modern West.
Rachel Stiff was born in Montana in 1986. After spending three years living in northwest Wyoming, she returned to Montana to complete undergraduate credentials in Fine Art. She received her MFA in Painting from The University of Arizona in Tucson in 2012. While fulfilling an artist’s residency in downtown Los Angeles, the artist found a new perspective on contemporary painting and continued a studio practice while exhibiting work there for nearly a year. She now resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.
